Lifecycle NotesEggs are laid singly on the leaves of Aristolochia host plants. The larvae are dark, spiny, and feed on the host plant's foliage. Pupation occurs on or near the host plant, with the pupa resembling a dead leaf or twig.
Identification TipsFemales are distinguished by their immense size, dark forewings with pale markings, and bright yellow hindwings with strong black venation and a dark border. Males are smaller and predominantly iridescent green.
Description
A very large and striking butterfly, the female has dark brown to black forewings with lighter, often yellowish, streaks or spots. Its hindwings are bright yellow with prominent black veins and a broad dark outer margin.
