Lifecycle NotesEggs are laid singly on host plant leaves. The green caterpillar, with yellow stripes and two 'horns' on its head, overwinters as a small larva before pupating into a green chrysalis suspended head-down.
Identification TipsDistinguished from the Common Purple Emperor (*Apatura iris*) by its more extensive orange-brown coloration, especially on the hindwings, and the distinct iridescent purple sheen. The prominent white subapical spot on the forewing is also a key feature.
Description
This butterfly features broad wings with a striking iridescent purple sheen, particularly on the forewings, set against a rich orange-brown background. Its wings are adorned with black spots and bands, and a prominent white spot near the forewing apex.
