Description

The Ulysses Butterfly, Papilio ulysses, is a large and iconic swallowtail butterfly celebrated for its dazzling iridescent blue wings. The dorsal surface of its wings displays a brilliant electric blue, sharply outlined by broad black margins. The ventral side is typically a more subdued, mottled brown or black, offering effective camouflage when the butterfly rests with its wings folded. Males are generally more vibrant than females. Its hindwings often feature small, sometimes red, ocelli (eyespots) near the characteristic swallowtail projections. It is a powerful and rapid flier, frequently observed darting through the canopy of tropical rainforests.
