Description
The Hackberry Emperor (Asterocampa celtis) is a common and widespread brush-footed butterfly found throughout eastern and central North America. Its dull brownish-orange wings, often adorned with eyespots on the hindwings, provide effective camouflage against tree bark. As its name suggests, its larvae feed exclusively on hackberry trees (Celtis species). Adults are known for their rapid, unpredictable flight and their preference for tree sap, rotting fruit, and other decaying matter over flower nectar.
