Description

Cracker butterflies, belonging to the genus Hamadryas, are renowned for their unique ability to produce a distinct 'cracking' or 'clicking' sound during flight, particularly by males during territorial displays. This sound is generated by specialized wing structures. They typically rest head-down on tree trunks, where their mottled grey and brown undersides provide excellent camouflage against bark. Their upper sides often feature intricate patterns with shades of blue, white, or red on a dark background.
