Lifecycle NotesEggs are laid in clusters on host plant leaves. Larvae are spiny, black with yellow stripes, and gregarious. Pupae are typically brown or greenish, suspended head-down. Adults overwinter.
Identification TipsDistinguished from the Small Tortoiseshell by its larger size, the absence of a central white spot on the forewing, and more extensive black markings. The underside is also generally darker.

Description

A medium-sized butterfly with bright orange wings heavily marked with large black spots and a dark, jagged border, featuring small blue and white submarginal spots.
